I think you're right that there's a subtle search going on. The folk revival, the craft movement, the local and seasonal instincts creeping into how people shop and eat. None of it has a name yet. Maybe that's fine. Maybe it doesn't need one.

I had a whole section in my first draft about Vergangenheitsbewältigungand the process of reckoning (I took it out because it felt like a whole other essay!) but I guess I just don’t know if we have the appetite for it on a cultural level. But I think a lot of us are doing that work and maybe all of this - the irony, the self-deprecation, the surge in folk traditions, the inner conflict, he woke trash-talk, the grappling - is part of that.

Something like Brexit shows the pull toward former glory at a national level, but what's happening at the grassroots feels more self-aware, closer to people actually searching for something than clinging to a prestige that's already gone.
